At-work driving is now the single biggest safety issue facing UK industry, with over 1000 deaths and 250,000 serious injuries occurring every year. To help tackle this issue the Government have now introduced Corporate Manslaughter legislation. With a number of Police initiatives and Government Legislation already in place, ignoring or deferring occupational road risk issues ceased to be a viable option some time ago.
Your drivers may be hundreds of miles away, but ‘duty of care’ remains with you!
Top 5 ‘Occupational Road Risk’ (ORR) Compliance Questions:
- Do you undertake an annual risk assessment/review of ORR to identify risks within your organisation?
- If an incident occurred would you be able to tell the Police the condition of the vehicle, its’ service history (even private vehicles), the condition of the driver, and the insurance status of the vehicle? (as a minimum requirement)
- Do you have a full set of Policies and procedures and a Drivers Handbook in place, (that is up-to-date with the latest legislation)?
- Do you monitor drivers working and driving hours to ensure compliance with the Working Time Directive? (opt-out’s do not apply to driving)
- Do you have a process for communicating the latest changes to the Law to your drivers, such as the recent 29 legislative changes to the Highway Code, smoking ban legislation, and the latest mobile phone ‘hands-free’ prosecutions?
If you answered ‘No’ to any of the questions above you need to act now!
